New To The Area

When you are new to the area, one of the hardest things is feeling alone. In another city, you’ve left behind your friends and your social life; here you don’t know anybody.. Sometimes when you start a new job or go to a new school you’ll meet people you like, but there’s no guarantee you’ll meet a new crowd you shares your interests.

That’s why social networking sites are so wonderful. It’s very easy to meet people right in your area, based on numerous criteria, including shared interests in music, reading, nightclubs, sports, fitness, or religion.

On Twitter, you can start by finding out what “tweetups” are in your area. These are meetups of Twitter members that are held regularly in most cities. You can also do a geographical search on Twellow.com, and start following Twitter members who live in your area. Strike up a conversation with them on Twitter if they seem to have similar interests. Let them know you’re new in town and ask questions about your interests – ask where the best Italian restaurants are, what’s the best gym, where the good bike paths are, where there are dog parks…and the conversation may end up leading to more!

On Facebook you can also search for people geographically, and you can join groups based on special interests. For instance in your Facebook account under account settings, if you click on “networks”, you can enter various terms, like Boston or New York. You can then send a request to join that network, which will be made up of other people who live in your area. You can also find local nightclubs and other social organizations that have fan clubs on Facebook, and become a member of their fan club. These days bands, restaurants, social groups, and just about everybody are likely to have a Facebook account or a facebook fan page. Joining them is the perfect way to find people who live in your area and share the same interests

Of course, Linkedin and Myspace are good too, for different types of crowds. Myspace is still largely the home of the young and the youth-oriented, whereas Linkedin is geared towards a more mature crowd with an interest in business-related social networking.

With all of those social sites out there, even if you’re new in town, you won’t be alone for very long.
